Wellfleet – The Wellfleet Police Department would like to make its citizens aware of the following telephone scam. The caller identifies him or herself as being a grandchild, sometimes using their appropriate grandchild’s name. They state they have been injured and arrested in the Dominican Republic. The caller requests money to be sent for bail and medical bills relating to an accident they were just in. They further state their voice may sound different due to facial injuries. They also request that no other family members be contacted regarding this situation. The caller further requests the money to be wired via Moneygram to the Dominican Republic.

A recent event involved a senior citizen from Wellfleet who was victimized by this scam. They received a call stating that their grandson was involved in an operating under the influence of alcohol arrest /accident and needed money to get back to the US. The senior citizen taped their equity line for the $1,700 and wired the money.

The Wellfleet Police Department urges everyone to use caution before wiring money or providing personal information. If in doubt, please call your local law enforcement for assistance.
