PROVINCETOWN – The Provincetown Police Department is warning about rental scams using the Internet. These scams often use Craig’s List but have also involved other sites such as VRBO (Vacation Rentals By Owner).
The scammers advertise a legitimate property with pictures and a realtor description. The scammers will then correspond with the victim and direct them to a fake real estate company or person[s]. This “company” will then have the victim execute a bogus rental agreement and have them mail a check or wire funds to a specified account or location.

When the victim arrives in Provincetown, there will be no actual rental property and the victim will have lost their money.

The Provincetown Police Department urges anyone with concerns regarding a possible scam rental to contact the Provincetown Police Detective Division: Detective Meredith K. Lobur or Detective Richard Alves at (508) 487-1212.
